Guide to Installing Weed Control Fabric Step by Step
Complete installation of weed control fabric: tools, overlaps, plant cuts, and finishing with gravel.
Installing weed control fabric is a one-afternoon job that pays off for years without a hoe. Order matters: clean soil, taut fabric, minimal cuts, anchoring, and covering.
Materials
Roll of 105 g/m² with the width that leaves the fewest seams, cutter, staples or pegs, gloves, and if possible, gravel or bark. Measure the flowerbed and add 20 cm on each side to bury the edge.
Steps
- Pull out grass and rhizomes. Rake and lightly water to settle.
- Unroll the fabric with the stable side facing up (the side that doesn’t fray when stepped on).
- Overlap 15-20 cm. Staple every 40-50 cm and always at seams and perimeter.
- Cut a small cross in each plant or drip hole.
- Cover with 4-6 cm of gravel or bark. Bury the edges 10 cm.
Water afterwards to see if the water reaches the root ball. If it runs off the top, the cut is small or the fabric is too tight over a mound.
Maintenance
Remove seedlings that sprout in the cuts by hand, not with a hoe (you'll tear the fabric). Check staples after strong winds. Don’t leave the fabric in direct sunlight for years: covering extends its life.
