Mistakes When Installing Weed Control Fabric

A properly installed 105 g/m² fabric saves years of weeding. If installed poorly, grass emerges from cuts, wind lifts it, and you end up discarding it. Here are the most common mistakes we see in gardens and flower beds.

Not Preparing the Soil

If you leave rhizomes of crabgrass or bulrush, they will penetrate. Pull them out, wait for regrowth, and clean again. Level the ground: fabric over clods tears when stepped on and leaves air pockets where seeds germinate.

Insufficient Overlap and Plant Cuts

Overlap 15-20 cm between sheets and secure with staples every 40-50 cm, more at edges and pathways. The cross-cut for planting must be precise: a palm-sized hole is an open door for purslane.

Do not cover the plant's neck or impede watering. If using drip irrigation, place it on top of the fabric to check for clogs; if using spray, ensure water reaches the root ball, not just the mulch.

Incorrect Weight and Use

105 g/m² is suitable for gardens and residential areas. It is not construction fabric or for machinery traffic. It also does not replace good drainage: in waterlogged soil, aquatic grasses and moss laugh at the fabric.
