Glossary

Vermiculite

Expanded mineral that retains water and cations. Ideal for overly dry terraces.

1 min read

Vermiculite looks like golden perlite and behaves the opposite way: it holds water and releases it slowly. In a July attic, it is an ally; in a shady patio, it can be excessive.

Uses

Covering layer in seedbeds, mixes for plants that do not want extreme drought, and a complement to coconut coir. It provides some cation exchange capacity, unlike perlite.

Dose

10-20% in potting mixes. 100% only for specific germination of fine seeds. It compacts more than perlite over time: do not base all your substrate on it.

What we recommend at Control Garden

Packs of vermiculite alone or with clay and perlite. Combine it; do not use it as the only “miracle substrate”.

FAQs

Is it suitable for cacti?
Not much. Cacti prefer to dry out. In that case, perlite and clay win.
Does it deplete?
It compacts. When the substrate becomes muddy, add new perlite.
Is it the same as aquarium mica?
Do not use construction or industrial vermiculite. Use agricultural grade for plants.
