Glossary

Agricultural Hydrogel

Polymer that stores irrigation water and releases it to the roots when the substrate dries.

1 min read

Agricultural hydrogel is not the gel from lava lamps. It is mixed with soil, hydrated beforehand, and reduces the frequency of watering in exposed terraces.

How it Works

It absorbs many times its weight in water and releases it based on humidity differences. It does not replace an aerated substrate or real drainage.

Limitations

Poorly dosed, it can rot. In humid interiors, it is excessive. In seedbeds, it can be a hindrance. Always read the label for formats of 1, 5, or 10 kg.

What We Recommend at Control Garden

Water-retaining hydrogel in 1 kg for testing and 5-10 kg for raised beds. Start small.
