Hydrangea: drinks a lot but doesn't want afternoon sun or a rotten pot.

The hydrangea wilts at 5 PM in July and recovers at night if the root ball isn't rock hard. Morning sun, afternoon shade.

Care

Pot size 18-25 L, frequent watering during bloom, substrate that retains moisture without suffocating (coconut + vermiculite, not just perlite).

Sunburned edges, powdery mildew, chlorosis in high pH. Hydrogel helps on terraces if mixed sparingly.

Large pot, vermiculite, and if traveling, lightweight hydrogel. No afternoon sun against a wall.

Blue or pink?

The color depends on pH and available aluminum. It's not a dye from watering.

Pruning?

Depends on type (macrophylla vs paniculata). Don't cut blindly in August all the buds.

Hydrogel doesn't replace watering: it spaces it out. Mixed poorly, it suffocates roots.

A small pot won't be fixed with more watering. Volume and drainage table.

Expanded mineral that retains water and cations. Ideal for overly dry terraces.
