Coconut Fiber or Universal Soil

Universal soil is convenient; coconut fiber is predictable. In pots, this difference is noticeable after two weeks: one becomes compacted and smells like a puddle; the other remains fluffy if mixed well.

What Each One Does

Universal soil usually contains peat, compost, and starter fertilizer. It feeds initially but compacts, increases salinity, and loses air. Coconut fiber retains water in the pores and leaves oxygen in the macropores: the roots do not suffocate.

Coconut provides almost no nutrients. You need to fertilize from the first watering after transplanting. In return, you can reuse more cycles and control the pH (normally 5.5-6.5) more easily.

When to Use Coconut

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and indoor plants that dislike waterlogging. Also in growing tables and systems with frequent watering. Mix it with perlite (20-30%) if you water a lot, or with vermiculite if the balcony gets full sun all day.

When to Stick with Universal

Dry herbs, cacti (better mineral substrate), and planters where you won't fertilize often. Still, lighten the universal with perlite or arlite: the bag “as is” in a pot without drainage is the recipe for yellow leaves.
