Thrips

Narrow insects on flowers. Damage includes scraping and, worse, the viruses they can carry.

Thrips invade the flowers of peppers and tomatoes. The petals appear silvery and deformed; the fruit shows corking spots.

Identification

Tap a flower onto white paper: dark threads will run. The underside shows silvery scraping.

Use soap with flower wetting in the evening (be careful of pollinators), blue monitoring traps, and remove flowering weeds nearby.

Early detection and contact soap. For terrace peppers, check the flowers every few days in June.

Are they substrate mosquitoes?

No. Thrips go for flowers and leaves; substrate mosquitoes fly from the wet pot.

Is soap enough?

In low pressure, yes, repeated. In strong greenhouses, sometimes not.
