How to Support Climbing Beans
Climbing beans need real height. Structures that won't fall with the first breeze.
A climbing bean on a 90 cm support is a desperate plant. In two weeks, it has covered the pole and feels overwhelmed. Plan for 180-210 cm and an anchor that can hold the wet weight.
Effective Structures
Tipi made of 3-4 bamboo poles 210 cm tied at the top. Double row of supports with crossbar. Mesh between two steel feet. In a 25 L pot, two 180 cm steel supports in a V shape with a top tie.
Sowing and Guiding
Sow 3-4 seeds at the base of each support. When they reach 15 cm, guide them by hand in the direction of twisting (counterclockwise usually works well). No need to tie them every day: a couple of supports and they will climb.
Wind and Watering
The foliage acts like a sail. Bury 30 cm of pole or use steel. Water at the base, not on the foliage: powdery mildew appreciates afternoon showers.
What We Recommend at Control Garden
Bamboo 180 and 210 cm in packs of 30-90, or 180 cm steel if the balcony is a wind tunnel.
