Growing Green Beans

Beans fix nitrogen and require structure. Trellis for pole; dwarf to the ground.

Sow when the soil is not frozen. Pole beans benefit the most from a 210 cm bamboo pack.

Dwarf vs Pole

Dwarf: no support, concentrated harvest. Pole: longer pod duration and 2 m height. Do not mix in the same trellis.

Direct, 3-4 cm. Does not transplant easily. Water at emergence and then regularly. Excess N leads to foliage and few pods.

Black aphid, spider in dry heat, snails in seedlings. Check underside in June.

Bamboo 180-210 cm in large packs: a trellis needs 4-8 poles, and you don’t want to run short by mid-May.

In a pot?

Pole in 25 L with two supports. Dwarf in 11-18 L.

Why do the flowers fall off?

Heat stress or drought. Water and provide some afternoon shade.

Is it sown in July?

A second short batch can be sown if there is water. July pole beans sometimes fail to develop the structure.
