How to Support Peppers and Eggplants
Peppers and eggplants bear heavy fruit on brittle stems. Here's how to support them without strangling the plant.
Peppers and eggplants do not climb like tomatoes, but their fruit can split them. A well-placed support from transplanting keeps the plant open, aerated, and harvestable without broken branches after heavy watering or a windy day.
What Support to Use
In a 18-25 L pot, a coated steel support of 120-150 cm holds better than thin bamboo: Italian peppers and eggplants can be heavy. Bamboo of ø14-16 mm is suitable in soil or if you use two canes in a V shape.
Avoid supports shorter than 90 cm: the first fruit set already exceeds that height. Drive the support 3-4 cm from the stem, never through the compact root ball.
How to Tie
Use raffia, loose ties, or rings. The knot should allow the stem to thicken. Tie below a node or fork, not in the soft internode. Check every 10-12 days: a tie that was loose yesterday may strangle today.
For eggplants, use one main support plus two side supports if the plant opens like a candelabrum. For peppers, one central support and a second if it bears large peppers on one side.
Common Mistakes
Tying too late, using thin wire, and driving the support when the fruit is already heavy. It is also a mistake to support only the stem and leave the side branches hanging: that’s where the eggplant breaks.
What We Recommend at Control Garden
Eco-friendly bamboo supports and PVC-coated steel supports, available in packs of 10 and 30, for gardens and pots. Choose height according to the crop, not based on what’s left in the shed.
