Tomato: cultivation and care

Tomato cultivation guide: sun, watering, substrate, supports, and common issues (yellow leaves, aphids, splitting).

Planta: Tomato

The tomato needs sun, regular watering, and vertical support. Without a stake, the stem breaks during production. Start with the stake and a well-draining substrate.

Ideal conditions

Soil or pot with good drainage, 6–8 hours of sun, and watering at the base, not on the leaves. In pots, use a generous volume (minimum 20–30 L) and an aerated substrate: coconut fiber, perlite, or clay pebbles at the bottom help.

Staking

Insert a stake of 180–210 cm when transplanting. Details on how to stake tomatoes and packs in stakes.

Common problems

Aphids (often with ants), downy mildew if you wet the foliage, splitting due to irregular watering, and calcium deficiency at the tip. If the leaves pale, read yellow leaves in tomatoes.

FAQs

How much sun does a tomato need?
At least 6 hours of direct sunlight. If on a balcony, orient it to the south or southwest and avoid cold night drafts in spring.
Do all varieties need staking?
Indeterminate varieties do. Determinate (bushy) varieties can use a cage or short stakes, but staking still helps.
