Guide to Choosing Bamboo or Steel Supports

How to choose bamboo or steel supports based on crop, height, and if you will reuse them season after season.

Cultivo: Urban Garden

Choosing the right support prevents broken stems, fruits on the ground, and diseases due to lack of air. At Control Garden, we work with two families: eco-friendly bamboo (light, natural) and steel (reusable and rigid).

When to Choose Bamboo

Bamboo fits well in seasonal gardens, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and annual vines. A support of 150–180 cm covers most determinate tomato plants; for indeterminate or tall lines, use 210 cm. The pack of 30 or 90 units is cost-effective if you plant in rows.

Stake it 20–30 cm deep and tie the stem with raffia or wide ties, never with thin wire: it can cut the plant as it thickens. Check the ties every 10–15 days during peak growth.

When to Choose Steel

Steel is worth it if the support stays in the garden for several years, there is wind, or the crop is heavy (branch tomatoes, cucumbers, young trees). Clean the metal at the end of the season to avoid carrying fungi.

Height and Diameter

Practical rule: the support should exceed the final height of the plant by 20–30 cm, counting what is buried. Diameter 14–16 mm for vegetables; thicker for trees or very exposed lines.

FAQs

Bamboo or steel for tomatoes?
For tomatoes that are 1.5–2 m tall, bamboo of 180–210 cm is sufficient. Steel is advisable if you reuse the support for several years or if the crop is very heavy.
What diameter of stake to use?
For vegetables, a diameter of 14–16 mm holds up well. Smaller diameters bend with wind or the weight of the fruit.
